‘Significant’ stock of all products available for sale

The curtain has finally come down on one of the best known and oldest reel brands in the southern hemisphere.

Australian manufacturer Alvey Reels, which was saved from closure by businessman, Con Athans in 2017, has announced its decision to cease production at the end of next month, ending a business that trading for over a century.

It cites the inability to source raw materials together with drastic cost increases, significant and increasing domestic and global supply chain logistics issues and disruptive COVID 19 staff shortages for the decision.

In a statement on its Facebook page, the company said “Alvey Reels has made the difficult decision that production at its Carole Park, Queensland, facility is no longer sustainable and to cease manufacturing.

“We at Alvey deeply regret this difficult decision, and whilst we commit to supplying as many of our products as we can for as long as we can, our immediate priorities are our loyal staff, dedicated retailers and passionate supporters and customers. On behalf of the Alvey team, we thank you all for your 102 years of support.”

It added that it is currently sitting on significant supplies across its whole range of products and there will be a structured sale of all remaining stock. It anticipates running its warehouse/dispatch and administration staff through to January/February next year.

Proudly Australian made and owned, Alvey Reels are renowned for their durability to tackle the harshest salt conditions. Models currently hitting highspots for anglers include the Orbiter range which is dominating estuary fishing across Australia and the Alvey sidecast reels.
